Gmail Setup
Connect your Gmail account to enable email capabilities in your AI agents.
Overview
The Gmail integration allows agents to search your emails, read message content, send emails on your behalf, and manage labels and organization. Before connecting, your organization must have Gmail integration enabled, you need a Google account with Gmail access, and you must have permission to authorize third-party apps.
Connecting Gmail
Start by going to the Integrations page and finding Gmail in the list. Click Connect to begin the OAuth process.
You'll be redirected to Google where you sign in to your Google account and review the requested permissions. Click Allow to authorize Gen8. After authorization, you're redirected back to Gen8 where your connection status shows as connected and your email address appears.
Permissions Explained
The Gmail integration requests these permissions:
| Permission | Description |
|---|---|
| Read emails | Search and read your messages |
| Send emails | Send emails on your behalf |
| Manage labels | Organize your inbox |
Gen8 only accesses emails when you use an agent with Gmail tools enabled.
Multiple Accounts
You can connect additional Gmail accounts by clicking Connect Another, signing in with a different account, and authorizing permissions. Both accounts become available for use.
When using agents, you can choose which account to use—each account has separate access with clear labeling so you always know which account you're working with.
Using Gmail in Agents
The Gmail Search tool lets you search through your emails:
User: Find emails from John about the project
AI: [Searches Gmail] I found 5 emails from John mentioning "project": "Project Update" (Yesterday), "Project Questions" (Last week)...
The Gmail Message tool lets you work with individual messages:
User: What did the latest email from Sarah say?
AI: [Reads Gmail] Sarah's latest email says: "Hi, just following up on our meeting..."
Security
Emails are read only when needed during conversations, and content is not stored permanently. All access is logged for security purposes.
You can revoke Gmail access anytime through Gen8 by disconnecting the integration, or through Google at myaccount.google.com under Security → Third-party apps.
For best security, only connect accounts you actually need, regularly review your connected apps, and use organization accounts when possible for better oversight.
Troubleshooting
Connection failed: Check that you're signed into the correct Google account and that Gmail is enabled on that account. Try clearing your browser cache or using incognito mode to retry.
Permission denied: Ensure your organization has Gmail integration enabled and that your account has Gmail access. Contact your organization admin if needed.
Token expired: If access stops working, reconnect the integration by completing the OAuth flow again. Check your Google account settings for any issues.
Organization Admin Setup
To enable Gmail integration for your organization, go to Organization Settings → Integrations, find the Gmail integration, click Enable, configure any organization-level settings, and save.
Admins can see which users have connected Gmail, require the connection for certain agents, and manage organization-level settings.
